Beauty Trends From Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 - Mohawks, Hair Gel & Vibrant Eyes

Paris Fashion Week Spring 2011 is still going strong, and the last few days have been packed with playful, fashion-forward takes on beauty. We've seen strands turn slick, eyes and lips co-exist in pigment-drenched harmony, Jett-black Mohawks, and models getting nailed with butterfly tattoos. Read on for more about the looks.

Make It A Double
In the City of Love, makeup artists made quite the chromatic gesture by drenching both the peepers and the pout in vibrant, multi-hued shades. Though breaking a well-known beauty rule ("thou shalt not accentuate both eyes and lips at the same time"), we loved the burst of color it brought to the runways. Dior had a "technicolor Bettie Page" theme, with artist Pat McGrath painting the entire lid in aqua, blue, red, or green shades and then adding the final pizzazz with a bright orange-tinged crimson lipstick in Rouge Dior No. 752. Backstage at Loewe, the bright candy tones of the collection were furthur enhanced by half-moon shaped eyes in brilliant shades paired with a bold lip in a different color (think turquoise eye and bright red lip).

Water A Difference
Though the fashion might have been high, the hair was definitely not dry on the runways this past weekend. Last Friday, we reported effortless looks achieved by leaving locks loose and natural, and this week hair had the same undone vibe, but it was achieved in an entirely different way: Wet strands got a dose of gel and then were fingercombed back into a ponytail. The overall effect was a sporty-sleek look that can be easily achieved at home. "This is something most women have actually worn-rushing out of the shower to work and putting hair, wet, into a low ponytail," says hairstylist Guido Palau, the man responsible for many of the tressed-down looks backstage. Over at Rouland Mouret and Loewe, damp hair was gelled and pulled into long, extension-enhanced ponytails, and at Akris, the look was a wet, high-shine knot inspired by simplicity and elegance. Lanvin ladies strutted a wet, low ponytail, which was inspired by a girl who just finished scuba diving and threw her hair back. "The look is strong and sexy, but in a simple way," says Palao.

Bespoke Accents
At Jean Paul Gaultier, Palao created 30 black Mohawk wigs (a few with color) inspired by Joan Jett and David Bowie, for a very 'rock and roll' feel. Backstage, he placed the wigs on the models and trimmed them to complement each girl's facial structure."The key to wearing a wig is bringing it into a salon and having your stylist cut/trim the wig to fit your face-it's not one size fits all," says Palao. At Loewe, nail aficionado Sophy Robson adorned nails with tattoo transfers she designed for the show with butterfly-scarf prints from the collection. Perhaps she was inspired by the recent Nailympics in London. Either way, we think they were a lovely addition to Loewe's overall sweet, springtime look.
