Hairdressers know the holidays can be one of the most profitable
times of the year. Pulling in holiday retail sales dollars can help
salons overcome the dreaded January slump. Here’s our list (we’ve
checked it twice) of things you need to do before December arrives to
make the 2014 holiday season your most successful yet.
1. Set a goal.
Review last year’s sales so you have a benchmark of where you want to
be this season (otherwise you’ll have no idea how to gauge your
success). Make sure to increase your inventory from a 14-day supply to a
21-day supply to guarantee product availability.
2. Train your staff.
They need to have knowledge of the products and be confident selling
special retail promotions and packages. Make sure they’re trained,
ready and on-board with your strategy (Hint: Get them excited by asking
for their input now). This should include front desk staff!
3. Create easy gift packs.
Make gift-giving super easy for clients by either using manufacturer
gift sets or making your own based on your clientele’s needs. You may
need a wider range of products than normal to meet the demands for
everyone on your clients’ shopping lists (ex: body care products, men’s grooming stocking stuffers).
4. Don’t forget about gift cards.
Gift cards
are the perfect way to relieve your client’s present-giving stress and
potentially earn new clients. Make sure this gift suggestion is properly
advertised around the salon or bundled with other gift ideas.
5. Set up beautiful displays.
Attract walk ins with eye-catching—but religiously neutral—displays
that fit with your salon’s branding (Elegant? Edgy? Commercial?
Artistic?). Products should be displayed within reach and at eye-level.
Ask your team for creative display ideas to get them in the festive
spirit.
6. Promote, promote, promote!
Don’t forget about in-salon displays and signage in waiting areas,
the front desk, and washrooms. Also, your website and social media
streams should have information on gift ideas and product promotions.
You may want to organize a fun shopping night event for loyal clients to
help push sales too.
7. Have a plan for leftover holiday retail.
If you have leftover holiday packs and products, break them apart or
repackage with a small discount in January to make a profit while giving
your clients some post-holiday season savings.
Thirty years ago, one hundred hairdressers attended the very first
British Hairdressing Awards, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional. This
week saw more than 1,700 hairdressers come together at the glamorous
Grosvenor House hotel to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the
hairdressing Oscars, and to celebrate the winners in the nine regional
and six specialist categories, as well as the ultimate award, HJ’s 2014
British Hairdresser of the Year.
The evening started with a trip down memory lane with a beautiful
retrospective film that highlighted the achievements from the past 30
years.
While HJ’s executive director Jayne Lewis-Orr welcomed everyone to
the Great Room, host for the night comedian and TV personality James
Corden wowed the crowd with his insider jokes and impressions of the
industry.
The night promised to be the most glittering event of the year – and
it didn’t disappoint. Following a delicious three-course meal of smoked
cheese arancini, fillet of Aberdeen Angus beef and lemon crème brulee
the awards were underway. Jamie Stevens, Philip Bell, Bruno Marc
Giamettei and Cos Sakkas were both inducted in to the Hall of Fame,
for three wins each in the Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, Scottish
Hairdresser of the Year, Southern Hairdresser of the Year and London
Hairdresser of the Year categories, respectively.
The X Factor’s Union J were mobbed as they sang a medley of their
hits including new single, You Got It All and a festive rendition of new
track, It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.
Before the coveted British Hairdresser of the Year was presented, the
nominees – Akin Konizi, Angelo Seminara, Darren Ambrose, Errol Douglas,
Gary Hooker and Michael Young, Jamie Stevens, Mark Hayes and Mark
Leeson – showcased a spectacular show of beautiful and creative styling.
Finally it was time to announce the 30th British Hairdresser of the
Year – with Mark Leeson taking home the title. Mark, with his fourth
British nomination, won with his feminine, eye-catching collection in
what is his 30th year in hairdressing.

Testimonials
“Once you experience Peter Millard’s color accurate lighting you will
think twice before asking an electrician or a contactor to specify your
lights. Peter knows about color and they don’t. It’s just that
simple.”
-Sam Villa, Three-time Winner of Stylist Choice Awards’ Platform Artist and Educator of the Year.
“I am a HUGE fan of the Peter Millard salon lighting. It showcases
perfectly L’Oreal Professionnel’s true to tone color. I will never have
to bring a client out into the sunshine to show them their color again!“
– Jessica Todd, Owner, Jessica Todd Salon.
"We installed Peter Millard's lighting during our renovation with
some apprehension because of the initial cost, but became true believers
when we saw how this lighting had made the salon brighter, livelier and
true to its purpose.
As for the stylists, they see truer color
from their clients. At the shampoo bar there are no more shadows and we
can see the actual color as we are rinsing in the sink. No more, "Let's
take the mirror outside," when we want our clients to see the results of
their hair color service. When clients comment on how good they look
when sitting at the station, it's a testament to how fabulous the
lighting really is.
New England winters are long and most
often grey, but when I enter the salon in the morning on a typical day,
it’s like the sun is shining. Thank you Peter for introducing us to this
fantastic lighting. It’s an indispensable tool for our work as
colorists."
- Alfredo Lamparelli, Owner, Salon Bogar.
What exactly do you get with Peter Millard Salon Lighting?
Color-accurate lighting, endorsed by some of Redken and Pureology’s top colorists and stylists!
You
will get amazingly clear, clean light, which will show you the complex
colors of the hair you are working on—as well as the color you are
applying— with greater detail than ever before. You will get clarity
with bright beautiful light that is free of glare. Your eyes will be
less tired than ever before and you will reduce the tension and fatigue
associated with eye strain caused by poor lighting.
Right now,
most colorists and stylists are working under a type of light that was
never intended for use in color-sensitive environments such as salons.
Fluorescent, incandescent, or halogen technologies all lack the color
accuracy salon professionals need to consistently deliver
professional-grade results.
With Peter Millard Salon Lighting, you will be working under LED
lighting that feels cool and comfortable for you and your clients. LED
lighting uses diodes, and the exact measurement of the color temperature
of the diodes creates the tone of the light itself.
Reduce color re-do's and dissatisfied clients.
Not only will you SEE better color, you will be able to consistently
deliver better results. Your clients be able to see the results you are
delivering clearly and in true light. As Adam Browne, a Redken main
stage performing artist from London put it, “Literally, see your color
the way it was intended to be seen. Luminous, lustrous, real.“
Why is it Color Accurate?
Eight colorists from L’Oreal, working in the Redken Exchange on
clients’ hair, have analyzed the color to arrive at a consensus of what
they consider “clear, true light”. This lighting is not the result of
one colorist’s opinion. It is the result of eight of the top
professionals working in the industry today. And none of them have
received payment to participate or to endorse the lighting. Not one.
The Result of the Testing?
Read the comments of the Colorists and Designers themselves and
of Salon Owners. The most remarkable endorsement of all – at the end of
the tests - The Redken Exchange actually bought the lighting and
installed it over all of the work stations and shampoo bowls in the
Redken Exchange on Fifth Avenue in New York.—a true testament to the
importance and value of Color Accurate Lighting.
Green Eco-friendly lighting to help Save the Planet.
Because LED lighting uses approximately 20% of the power of
incandescent lighting, you will be reducing electrical use by nearly 80%
at the workstations. You will also lower the heating level by up to
80%, which reduces the use of air-conditioning. Cutting your electric
bills significantly. In fact, the savings in electricity will pay for
the bulbs in 2 years.
Warranted for Three Years
Peter Millard Salon Lighting bulbs are guaranteed to last a
minimum of three years, or we replace the bulb at no charge! Just return
it with proof of date of purchase. Even better than that, the average
life of the bulb is normally five to seven years. Just imagine not
changing bulbs for 5 years!
