Troy Polamalu's long locks insured for $1 million

Troy Polamalu's long locks insured for $1 million

You'd think that an All-Pro safety who missed 11 games in 2009 due to a knee injury would be most concerned about other body parts, but Pittsburgh Steelers superstar Troy Polamalu(notes) also has endorsements to consider. One of his endorsements is with the Head & Shoulders company, which makes sense when you consider Polamalu's famed three-foot-long hair. It's a tribute to his Samoan heritage, and it's not something he plans to cut anytime soon.

Once in a great while, a Steelers opponent will try to use Polamalu's hair against him in a game (as Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson(notes) did in 2006 as Polamalu returned an interception), and it's quite possible that the concern over such matters was the catalyst needed by Head & Shoulders to insure Polamalu's hair with Lloyd's of London for $1 million, which was reported by the Associated Press.

Then again, it could be a publicity stunt. Lloyd's is famous for unusual policies that can be turned into media gold; the company has insured Tina Turner's legs, Keith Richards' fingers, the legs of noted Riverdance ponce Michael Flatley, the bodies of several professional wrestlers (including Ric Flair -- Woo!), Jimmy Durante's nose, and Celine Dion's vocal cords (they're also talking with Virgin Galactic about insuring space travel, if that ever gets off the ground). Polamalu's hair isn't going anywhere, but it's a nice press haul for company and endorsee.

And if you want to ask Polamalu why his hair is insured ... well, just don't ask with your eyes. He can pick that up pretty well.

Do Hair Growth Pills Work?

Hair Growth Pills - Snapphoto
Many individuals suffer because their hair doesn’t grow quickly, or when it does, it is weak and brittle. These individuals probably wish there was a magic pill that would make their hair grow quickly and help it be healthy and strong. Some vitamins work wonders with hair, and below individuals will find an overview of hair growth vitamins.

Are Vitamins the Cure-All for Hair?

While many hair growth vitamins will help individuals grow hair quickly that is strong and healthy, they are not a cure-all. Individuals should take a close look at the hair products they are using. Are the products harsh and full of dangerous chemicals? It’s important to seek hair care products that are nourishing and gentle while taking hair growth vitamins, to maximize the vitamins’ ability to help the hair grow in quickly. It will also help create healthier, stronger hair.
To maintain healthy hair, take therapy-g Hair Vitamins, designed to provide 100% of the DV (Daily Value) of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
To maintain healthy hair, take therapy-g Hair Vitamins, designed to provide 100% of the DV (Daily Value) of vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

What Should be Present in Hair Growth Vitamins?

There are a number of vitamins that will help hair, and when an individual takes a multi-vitamin, there are certain things that should be included. Biotin is one of these things. Biotin is a member of the B family of vitamins and helps produce keratin, which is what hair is made from. Vitamins B5 and B12 help the individual keep their hair, and reduce thinning hair and hair loss. Vitamin B3 will help stimulate the hair follicles and circulation in the scalp for stronger hair.

JF Lazartigue's Revitalizing Hair Vitamins nourishes and strengthens the hair, restoring its vitality. Composed of wheat germ and horseradish, scalp trace elements (zinc), keratin sulfated amino acids (cystine, menthionine), and vitamins (A, B and E). These tablets will restore the hair's natural beauty. Size: 60 Tablets

Speak to a Physician

Individuals considering taking hair growth vitamins should consult with their physician first. While vitamins may be the answer for some individuals, hair loss or brittle, weak hair could be a sign of a more serious medical condition. It’s important to find out the underlying cause of the hair loss or thinning, brittle hair. If the physician feels that the individual is simply in need of more nutrients and minerals, then it’s fine to go ahead

Especially formulated with silica and other essential ingredients to hold cells together, this complex provides the internal nourishment to help grow thicker, fuller, healthier hair.

How Vitamins Help the Hair Grow

The human body contains and makes certain vitamins, or receives them from the foods individuals eat. Some individuals don’t receive enough of a particular vitamin from the foods they eat. Others don’t make enough of the needed minerals or vitamins in order to grow healthy, strong hair. By taking vitamins, individuals provide their bodies with the nutrients and vitamins they need in order to grow strong, healthy hair. This is how the vitamins help individuals grow stronger hair…by providing the body with the needed nutrients.

By using the information above, individuals can learn more about hair growth vitamins and how they can work to help hair grow in quickly, strong and healthy.

Drew Barrymore’s Hair Secrets

Photo: Getty Images

Giannandrea, the star’s longtime friend and stylist, reveals the inspiration behind her glamorous red carpet looks...

In the nearly three years he’s worked with Drew Barrymore, hairstylist Giannandrea has taken tresses to new heights (think ‘60s-inspired bouffants) and made bedhead look chic (see photo at left, from last week’s London premiere of Going the Distance). “She is like a chameleon, constantly evolving,” says the Italian coiffeur of his muse.

Photo: Carter Smith
ELLE’s August 2010 Cover

For the ELLE shoot with creative director Joe Zee and photographer Carter Smith, Giannandrea says Barrymore arrived to the set with her natural waves un-brushed and undone. “I was like, wow,” he recalls. “I wanted to retain the texture as much as possible because it was so beautiful.”

To prep Barrymore’s strands and make them “less raw,” Giannandrea began by misting them with water. Next, he parted her damp tresses down the center and twisted them into two buns, one on each side of the head (think Princess Leia from Star Wars). After letting hair sit for a bit, he then undid the coils and diffused curls with a blow-dryer. “It’s a simple yet effective technique for getting chunky waves,” he says.

Golden Globe Awards: January 2009

Barrymore’s supersized bob received a flurry of responses—some not so positive—but Giannandrea wasn’t daunted by the naysayers. “[The hairstyle] stirred up controversy, but I think it’s important to push the envelope and have fun,” he told us at the time. “You have to stay alive during these difficult economic times and take a chance.”
Looking back at the statement-making ‘do, Giannandrea only has fond memories. “That was a moment, I tell you!” he exclaims with a laugh. “Drew and I looked at each other before she stepped onto the red carpet and that’s when I realized it was actually happening—that we were doing this unconventional hair for a traditional event. I was so happy because she took that look and owned it. She felt sexy wearing it, and it became part of her.”

 SAG Awards: January 2010

Giannandrea revisited 1960s glamour earlier this year when he coaxed Barrymore’s tresses into a pumped-up French twist for the Screen Actors Guild Awards. “It was a combination of Monica Vitti and Brigitte Bardot,” he says of the style’s inspiration. “What made the hair modern were Drew’s short face-framing layers in the front—she had these long bangs because I’d just cut her hair in a bob.”
Getting the right look for Barrymore’s updo was no easy feat: As with any hairstyle, Giannandrea says that deciding which time period to draw from is just the beginning. “There are a multitude of styles within each era,” he explains. “You have to downsize until you find three or four looks that might be cool.”
Before consulting with Barrymore about a potential 'do, Giannandrea does extensive research on the Internet, culling hundreds of images as inspiration: “From the initial batch, I’ll select about 150 based on style, texture, and feel. Then I sit down with Drew and we look at them together.”

How to Clean Your (or anyone else's!) Cosmetic Brushes

Knowing the correct way to clean your cosmetic brushes is important...or did you ever even think to clean your makeup brushes? Many people don't even think about it, but dirty brushes are a breeding ground for germs and even if you are only using them on yourself regular cleaning will allow a smoother fresh and clean application of cosmetics, and save you from skin irritaions and acne.

So here is how it is done!

What You Need:
1) Dirty Brushes
2) Brush Cleanser (check with your local beauty supply, or MAC makes  a very popular one)
        OR
3) Gentle/Mild Shampoo
4) Paper towel
5) Hand towel

Daily Cleansing:
1) Immediately after using, dab a bit of brush cleanser on a clean paper towel and swipe your dirty brush on it until the residue and dirt come off
2) Lay on a clean paper towel to dry (shouldn't take long to dry and will be ready for your next makeup application or touch up)

Weekly Cleansing:
1) Wet only the hairs/tips of the brush (be sure not to wet the ferrule of the brush.  Water will cause the glue to gradually dissolve resulting in a brush with no bristles!)
2) With your gentle shampoo and rub a decent amount  (depending on the brush size) into the brush
3) Rinse until the water runs clean (if needed, repeat the process)
4) Re-shape your brush using a pinching flattening motion
5) Lay flat to dry on a clean linen towel

Most cosmetic brushes are made out of actual hair of one type or another, so simply keep in mind that  drying time is going to coincide with the density and type of hair your brush is made of, and also the extent of  depth in washing.

Here we bring you a really good and informative tutorial we found on Youtube.com posted by MakeupGeek. Have fun and  Enjoy!

The owner of a bountiful head full of curls can often experience a love hate relationship with their locks as the wrong cut can, at worst, leave you with the appearance of a distressed poodle. However, naturally curly haired ladies are actually very lucky as a variety of styles and tightness of curls can result in a variety of looks straight-haired girls can only dream of - you just have to be brave enough to try them. Plus, nothing is more glamorous than a sleek curly 'do as many an A-lister will testify, just take a look at any red carpet affair. So, take a look at these salon and celebrity hairstyles for hairstyle ideas and inspiration.

Errol Douglas for Matrix:
We're all in love with this style but few people have the hair to carry it off. However, if you've got the length and either naturally curly hair or hair that holds texture well then curl away and then backcomb gently with your fingers for a great party season look.

How To Get Halle Berrys New Bob Haircut ~ Vogue

 by BellaSugar

Halle Berry would look good in just about any haircut imaginable, but she's rocking an extremely sexy new bob on the cover of Vogue's September issue. Stylist Oribe created the look for her, so to find out how you can get a similarly smokin' style, just keep reading.
  • Oribe wanted Halle's hair to be sharp and sleek. "The idea was to get flat, straight hair with soft, moveable bangs to create interest," he says.
  • To get this style at a salon, Oribe says to ask for a shorter bob. "The key is that it needs to be tailored to each person, by changing the length of the bangs, for example," he says. "The whole style is about simplicity and strength." Also, always remember to bring in a picture.
  • When you're styling your bob at home, Oribe's styling steps are as follows: "First, blow-dry hair straight. Next, apply Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray to the hair shaft, and use a flat iron all over. As a last step, smooth any stray hairs with a flat brush.

Newlywed Hilary Duff Debuts Dark New 'Do

Credit: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/WireImage.com; RAMEY PHOTO
Less than a week after saying "I Do" in a lavish California ceremony, actress Hilary Duff debuted a brand new hairdo in Beverly Hills Thursday.

After she spent several hours in the stylist's chair, the 22-year-old former Gossip Girl star -- who recently returned home from her Mexican honeymoon with hockey player Mike Comrie  -- sported strawberry blonde locks as she exited the Byron and Tracey Salon.

Earlier this year, Duff -- who was accompanied by her big sister Haylie during the makeover -- gushed to UsMagazine.com that her 29-year-old husband is everything she's ever wanted in a partner.

"He's a great guy. I've never met anyone who could say a bad word about him," she said. "He's generous, caring, funny. We just laugh our heads
off, which I need in my life."

Blonde vs. Brunette: What's Right for You?

Having trouble deciding whether to go darker or lighter? Marie Claire makes coloring your hair easy with our definitive guide to finding your perfect shade.

Better Blonde
Go blonde if you...
Have lots of pink in your skin
A cool, baby blonde is gorgeous with rosy skin, says Matthew B. It freshens the face yet prevents the skin from looking too flushed. Conversely, rosy skin (or even just a face full of bubble-gummy makeup) will clash with warm, brown hair.

Want to cut your hair short
Meg's messy shag. Reese's bob. Jane from Melrose Place's chic crop circa '94. "When a short haircut is really hot, it's always on a blonde," says Matthew B. This is probably partly due, says Parvin, to highlights' ability to play up a style's shape.

Need a lift
"When I have a client who is going through a crisis or just feels down, I tell her to lighten up, "says DePalo. Blonde, she promises, adds brightness to your look—and your outlook.

Better Brunette
Go brunette if you...
Have very thin hair
Darker strands add dimension and the illusion of thickness to fine, airy hair, says Kristen DePalo, a colorist at the Insitu Salon in New York City. Tip: To add extra depth, she recommends coloring the under-layers a slightly richer shade than the top.

Have an olive complexion
No skin tone is better suited to chocolaty strands (or more poorly suited to light locks -- see Julia Roberts, above, as a blonde), says celebrity colorist Matthew B. of the Amato Salon in Beverly Hills. A rich brown will counteract your complexion's tendency toward sallowness, as well as make your eyes and teeth look whiter.

Can't deal with high-maintenance hair?
Keeping up with lightened locks is costly and time-consuming, while going darker can require as few as two visits a year, says Nelson Chan, a colorist at the Estetica Salon in Beverly Hills. Brunettes also have an easier time coloring at home, says Matthew B., because they aren't removing pigment (as you must to go blonde) and don't have to worry about brassiness.

Short Hair Tips

Find out how to make the most of your short hair with these great cut, color and style tips!

View yourself in various alternative hair styles at TheHairStyler.com!

For the perfect wash-and-go style, you just can’t beat the appeal of short hair.

But there's more to short hair than just quick styling times. Short hair is also very versatile and can give you a huge range of looks simply by choosing a certain haircut, adding a great hair color, and styling your hair in different ways.

“If changing your look is something that you do often then keep or grow some long lengths in the top section of your short hair so that you can add variety...”

Short Haircut Tips

When it comes to choosing a short haircut, the possibilities are endless. These days there are so many variations of short hairdos that the hardest part is deciding which one to try!
  • If really short hair is a look that you like then a pixie hair cut is a great option. It does suit those with small, petite facial features best, but you can ask your hairstylist to leave some extra length through the top or to add bangs for a softer finish if you have larger features.
  • If changing your look is something that you do often then keep or grow some long lengths in the top section of your short hair so that you can add variety with spikes, flicks, curls, salon straight locks and quiffs.
  • To keep your short haircut in shape and your hair in tip-top condition, maintain your cut with a monthly hair trim.
Short Hair Color Tips

To really make the most of your short hair, use color to create an eye catching look!
  • Solid hair colors in bold tones will draw attention to your short hair.
  • Try rich colors and light reflecting shades to highlight the great shape of your hair cut and to give you glossy locks.
  • Avoid adding lots of highlights to a shorter ‘do so that your hair doesn't look dated.
 Short Hair Styling Tips

When it comes to styling short hair there are plenty of easy tips that you can incorporate to boost your look.
  • When blow-drying, dry your hair in sections starting from the back and use a small radial brush to ensure that you reach every strand.
  • Use hair styling products to add texture your locks. Gel wax and moulding cream are both excellent for short hair and will provide hold without making your hair stiff.
  • To add volume and body, use mousse at your roots and hot hair rollers.
  • Jazz your hair up with hair accessories such as decorated pins, colored hair clips and headbands.
  • If a short hairstyle filled with volume is what you’re after, have your hairdresser add hair extensions to your locks that can then be cut to match the rest of your short 'do. Thick hair will instantly be yours, and you’ll be able to style with lots of luscious volume!
  • Remember to make sure you only use small amounts of shampoos, conditioners and styling products to avoid drowning your short strands in too much hair product.
And there you have it! Some great short hair tips. Whether your hair is already short and you’re looking for new ways to spice up your look, or you’re thinking of going short. These tips will have you well on your way to fabulous looking short hair!

Kim Kardashian: ‘My Entire Body is Hairless’

"Between filming Keeping Up The Kardashians, promoting her expanding fashion and beauty empire, and dealing with the ever-present paparazzi, Kim Kardashian rarely steps out of the house without a full face of a makeup on. “Makeup is my life,” Kim tells Allure in its September issue. In fact, when Kim was just 14, her father enrolled her in beauty school “to learn how to apply makeup properly, so I wouldn’t have too much on or look crazy.” Her secrets to a flawless face start underneath her favorite Make Up For Ever HD Foundation and Powder. “I use PerfectSkin, the system my sisters and I had a dermatologist make for us [and] for body moisturizer, I love Johnson’s Baby Lotion,” Kim tells the publication about her high-low beauty routine. And while the sexy star is a seasoned pro when it comes to touching up her face, she leaves the taming of her tresses to the professionals. “Anytime you see [my hair] in a ponytail, you know I did it,” Kim quips. And her head isn’t the only place that her raven hair seems to get in the way. “I am Armenian, so of course I am obsessed with laser hair removal!” she says. “Arms, bikini, legs, underarms…my entire body is hairless.” To hear more from Kim, pick up Allure‘s September issue, or visit Allure.com to see additional photos from Kim’s cover shoot." –Andrea DeSimone
