Zoë
Kravitz, 25, the daughter of the singer Lenny Kravitz and the actress
Lisa Bonet, has pursued both of her parents’ professions. Her new
projects include a supporting role in the soon-to-be-released
“Divergent,” an action movie based on the first book in a trilogy of young-adult novels by Veronica Roth.
Born in the Venice section of Los Angeles, Ms. Kravitz, who is also a
member of the rock band Lolawolf, now lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn,
with the kind of luxuriously bohemian beauty regimen common to each
neighborhood.
SKIN CARE
My morning and nighttime routines are pretty much the same. My facialist, Dayle Breault,
whom I’ve been going to since I was 15 — my mom and dad go to her, too,
which is how I found out about her — makes her own line. She has an
amazing face wash that I use, or when I’m traveling, she has these
really great cleansing pads, which are like a toner and cleanser in one.
Under the eyes, I use a cream by Dr. Hauschka. Kiehl’s has an avocado
eye cream that’s good, too. In the wintertime, I might use Dayle’s mist
afterward, because it keeps your skin moisturized, and I like her serum.
I’ll add that when it gets so dry here. In the shower, I use Dr.
Bronner’s almond soap. Kiehl’s has a really great soap, too, that I’ll
switch to sometimes. It’s called Kiehl’s Aromatic Blends: Vanilla and
Cedarwood. Afterward, I’ll use coconut oil. I’ll use any brand as long
as it’s 100 percent, and it’s something that I’ll pick up at the
health-food store. For the most part, everything I use is either by
Dayle or it’s on the natural side. I don’t like to put too much on if I
don’t know what it is. The product is going in your pores every day.
Like with coconut oil, you can literally eat it. I also like this
company called Simply Divine Botanicals. Their products are organic.
They make really great body butters, and they have a face wash I like,
too. I’ve been using their How Now Brown Cacao butter. It smells like
chocolate — yummy.
MAKEUP
Day
to day, I don’t wear a lot of makeup. Dayle makes an SPF that’s really
great or Laura Mercier has these shimmery tinted moisturizers with SPF.
In the summertime, you can put a layer on, and it’s glowy and pretty.
I
do always wear blush, but it’s like a stain. I’ve been wearing the
Benefit liquid one — it’s called Benetint — since high school. For a
while, I was much more into shading, like contour or bronzer, and
sometimes in the winter I’ll switch to that. My lip balm is by Dr.
Hauschka. For mascara, I like what you can get at Duane Reade. I’m not
picky about brand. I just don’t like waterproof mascara because it
doesn’t come off.
If
I’m going out at night, I’ll do more. I do like a cat eye. Chanel makes
this great liquid liner. That’s my favorite thing. Sometimes, I’ll do a
classic red lip or a dark brown, but it’s more work to keep it together
as the color wanders. For that, Nars has good chubby pencils. I have
them in Cruella, a warm red, and a color called Dragon Girl. I like to
mix them together. When I first started performing with my band, Lolawolf,
I would do more of a look. But it’s me and two guys who could care less
if I was getting dressed up, so now I pretty much do the same as I
would anyway. Depending on where my skin is at, I might wear a
foundation. I don’t like a lot of coverage. I’ll dab on Radiant Creamy
Concealer by Nars where I need it. And there’s something called Lycogel
that I discovered when I was shooting in South Africa. I went to a spa
and tried it out and liked it. It’s not heavy.
FRAGRANCE
I
love oils. Right now, I like vanilla musk, which I picked up at Whole
Foods. But I’ll have others, and I usually mix different scents.
Sometimes I’ll add a sandalwood. I’m also really into a Tom Ford cologne
called Tobacco Vanille. It probably can be unisex. It works on both men
and women. Also, recently this woman was wearing Tom Ford Tuscan
Leather, which is more masculine, and it smelled incredible.
HAIR
I have a woman, Nikki Nelms,
who comes to my house and cuts my hair. I met her at a W magazine shoot
about two years ago. She’s really adventurous and comes up with ideas
for me for events and stuff like that. This is my natural hair color
right now. I colored it a couple years ago and it was kind of blond. It
looked really cool, but my hair couldn’t handle it.
Otherwise,
I use Wen products to wash my hair. The shampoo is really a conditioner
and shampoo in one. It’s especially for African-American hair because
it doesn’t strip it of all the oils. My mom introduced it to me. I’ve
always had her there for good beauty advice. We’re both beauty fans. My
friends are always laughing at her and me because we’re like witches
with our potions and bottles and things.
TREATMENTS
Where
I really spoil myself is my facials with Dayle. She’s between L.A. and
New York, and I try to go as often as I can. Her facials have also
become my go-to gifts for girlfriends. My theory is, when your skin is
good, you can be confident and you don’t have to wear makeup.
DIET AND FITNESS
I’m a big fan of juice and health and all that stuff. That’s where beauty starts. I make sure that I’m eating well.
Usually
for a film, I’ll have to hit a gym. Although in the winter in New York,
it can be tough to go out of the house. I go through phases. Right now,
I really like the “Ballet Beautiful”
at-home videos. I haven’t been to an actual class of theirs in ages,
but I’ll travel with the videos, and you can do it anywhere. I do try to
fit in cardio. In the summertime, I’ll run in the park or something,
and in the winter, it’s the gym. I also walk everywhere. Thank God for
New York because I probably spend 80 percent of my time walking, from
going up and down stairs to catching the subway.
