Bill to deregulate Indiana cosmetologists pulled

The Courier Press reports that Rep. Dave Wolkins was swayed by the hundreds of cosmetologists and others who turned up at the Statehouse to protest the bill, which proposed removing the requirement for licensing.
Wolkins told the paper that the professionals who testified on the bill were so persuasive in their argument that the industry needs licensing and regulation that he wouldn't even ask for a vote on it.
Besides cosmetologists, the bill also recommended eliminating boards overseeing dietitians, hearing aid dealers, private investigator firms and security guards.
House Bill 1006 was the result of a study by the Regulated Occupation Evaluations Committee. It sparked a huge outcry among cosmetologists, who argued that the bill would have allowed anyone to handle potentially dangerous chemicals in salons, thus placing customers at risk. Wolkins said he was impressed by the fierce opposition.
"I knew it was going to be a difficult day when all the cosmetologists were downstairs and started cheering: 'We've got scissors, yes we do, we've got scissors, how 'bout you?' " he said.
